Manavgat is a working district town on the river of the same name, roughly seventy-five kilometres east of Antalya. Most people who have been there arrived on a coach for the waterfall or the weekly market and left again the same afternoon, which gives a misleading impression of somewhere that is, in administrative terms, among the most significant places on this stretch of coast. The district is large, the town is its centre, and almost every well-known resort name in the eastern province sits inside its boundaries.

What the district actually covers

Side, Sorgun, Kumköy, Çolaklı and Evrenseki all belong to Manavgat. That is worth knowing because official addresses, municipal services and postal details use the district name even when a hotel markets itself purely as "Side". If a booking confirmation, a transfer voucher and a listing each name a different place, they may well all be describing the same few kilometres of coast. The resort side of that equation is covered in our Side area guide.

The river and the canyon

The waterfall sits a short distance upstream from the town and is wide rather than tall, with a tea garden and a boardwalk around it. River-boat trips leave from the town quays, and further inland the reservoir behind the Oymapınar dam is marketed to day-trippers as the Green Canyon. These are the district's main draws and they are firmly daytime activities.

A town for errands rather than evenings

The town centre itself is not a nightlife destination and does not pretend to be. It is an ordinary Turkish town: banks, dentists, hardware shops, phone dealers, and a large weekly street market that pulls people in from the whole coastal belt. Visitors sleeping in the resort strips typically come into Manavgat for shopping, paperwork or a haircut, then head back out to the coast for the evening.

Where visitors actually sleep

Hardly anyone on holiday stays in the centre; the accommodation is out in the coastal belts two to ten kilometres away, and those villages also hold a substantial foreign resident and holiday-home population living there year-round. The Manavgat district and its coastal resorts currently account for 33 live listings. Because the settlements are spread out and dolmuş services thin after dark, agreeing which belt you are in — and how the return journey works — matters more here than it would in the city. For the longer-running hotel corridor nearer Antalya, see Belek.

Safety, briefly

The directory is 18 and over, and arrangements must be consensual and lawful. Money should never move before a meeting has happened. A room number is not something to publish, and a conversation that feels rushed or coercive is one to leave.

Frequently asked questions

Is Manavgat the same as Side?
Side sits inside the Manavgat district, along with Sorgun, Kumköy, Çolaklı and Evrenseki. Official addresses often use Manavgat even when a hotel markets itself purely as Side, which can make a booking look inconsistent when it is not.
Should I stay in Manavgat town itself?
Most visitors do not. The town is an ordinary working centre with banks, shops and a large weekly street market, while the holiday accommodation sits in the coastal belts two to ten kilometres away. People come in for errands and head back out for the evening.
What is there to see around Manavgat?
The waterfall a short distance upstream from the town, river-boat trips from the quays, and the reservoir behind the Oymapınar dam, marketed to day-trippers as the Green Canyon. All three are daytime activities.
